Can a holiday be both relaxing and adventurous?
Can you explore multiple countries, experience new cultures, enjoy incredible cuisine, and still return home feeling rested? Yes, you absolutely can!
If you love to explore as much as you love to unwind, a European river cruise might just be the perfect escape.
Why Choose a European River Cruise?
River cruising offers a unique blend of discovery and relaxation. Unlike ocean cruises, river cruises dock right in the heart of historic towns and cities, meaning less travel time and more immersive experiences.
In just one week, you can:
- Visit multiple countries
- Explore charming riverside towns
- Discover ancient ruins and centuries-old cathedrals
- Sample regional cuisine and wines
- Enjoy luxury accommodation and attentive service
- Unpack once and wake up somewhere new each day

My Journey Began in Koblenz
We embarked in Koblenz, Germany, where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet, and stepped aboard our home for the next seven days: the elegant Riverside Cruises vessel, the Riverside Debussy.
At just 135 metres in length, the ship felt intimate yet surprisingly spacious. Thoughtfully designed lounges, panoramic dining areas, and a full-length upper deck provided plenty of room to relax. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the ship, including in our suite, ensured uninterrupted views of river life from morning to night.
The atmosphere was refined yet welcoming. The staff were warm, friendly, and attentive, striking the perfect balance between professional service and genuine hospitality.

Cruising the Moselle, Rhine & Main Rivers
We journeyed from Germany to the Netherlands, via Switzerland and France, experiencing the changing landscapes and cultures of Central Europe. Our itinerary took us along three iconic European rivers:
- Moselle
- Rhine
- Main
One of the highlights was sailing through the dramatic Rhine Gorge, home to over 40 fairytale-like castles perched high above the riverbanks. Acres of vineyards stretched across rolling hillsides, while medieval towns appeared like scenes from a storybook.
Onshore Adventures: Culture, History & Local Flavours
Each day brought new discoveries:
- Ancient Roman ruins
- Magnificent centuries-old cathedrals
- Fascinating historical museums
- Bustling local markets
- A visit to a royal palace
- Charming riverside townships full of character
And of course, no European journey would be complete without indulging in local delicacies. We sampled regional wines in vineyard-lined valleys, enjoyed traditional German bratwurst, and couldn’t resist sweet Dutch stroopwafels.
Every port offered a new story, a new flavour, and a new perspective.
Life Onboard: Luxury Meets Leisure
Back onboard, relaxation came naturally.
Days unfolded at a gentle pace:
- Cocktail-making masterclasses in the lounge
- Scrabble games with panoramic river views
- Live violin performances and operatic recitals
- BBQ lunches on deck
- Evening cocktails in the sunshine
One of the most mesmerising experiences was watching the captain expertly navigate winding waterways and intricate river locks. With a glass of fizz in hand, we often found ourselves simply watching the world drift by, a reminder that sometimes the journey is just as magical as the destination.
Gourmet Dining at Its Finest
Dining onboard was an experience in itself.
Expect:
- Mouth-watering multi-course meals
- An extensive wine list featuring regional selections
- Fresh, locally inspired ingredients
- Flexible dining options
- Impeccable service
Each meal felt indulgent yet unhurried. another reason river cruising feels both enriching and restorative.
The Perfect Seven-Day Escape
In just seven days, we:
- Travelled through four countries
- Cruised three iconic rivers
- Visited historic towns and cities
- Explored castles and cathedrals
- Sampled regional cuisine
- Enjoyed luxury relaxation
A relaxing adventure may sound like a contradiction — but river cruising proves it’s entirely possible.
