Located far offshore in the Timor Sea, Ashmore Reef is a remote Australian external territory known for its exceptional marine biodiversity. Vansittart Bay is a beautifully protected large bay with several islands and coves. Jar Island contains ancient rock art galleries depicting the Gwion Gwion style unique to the Kimberley region. Mainly neglected by, or unknown to, the early European researchers of Aboriginal culture in the Kimberley in favour of the dominant & more dramatic Wandjina art, Gwion Gwion art has in recent years gained world prominence. Join your Expedition Team ashore for a short walk, past some fascinating rock formations, to the site of the Gwion Gwion art galleries.

Cruise into one of the Kimberley’s most dramatic landscapes, where towering red cliffs rise above the winding King George River. At its end, the spectacular King George Falls cascade into the river below, forming one of the Kimberley’s most impressive twin waterfalls. 

Darwin is Australia’s most colorful, and exotic, capital city. Surrounded on three sides by the turquoise waters of the Timor Sea, the streets are lined with tropical flowers and trees. Warm and dry in winter, hot and steamy in summer, it’s a relaxed and casual place, as well as a beguiling blend of tropical frontier outpost and Outback hardiness. Thanks to its close proximity to Southeast Asia and its multicultural population it also seems more like Asia than the rest of Australia. Darwin is a city that has always had to fight for its survival. The seductiveness of contemporary Darwin lifestyles belies a history of failed attempts that date from 1824 when Europeans attempted to establish an enclave in this harsh, unyielding climate. The original 1869 settlement, called Palmerston, was built on a parcel of mangrove wetlands and scrub forest that had changed little in 15 million years. It was not until 1911, after it had already weathered the disastrous cyclones of 1878, 1882, and 1897, that the town was named after the scientist who had visited Australia’s shores aboard the Beagle in 1839. During World War II it was bombed more than 60 times, as the harbor full of warships was a prime target for the Japanese war planes. Then, on the night of Christmas Eve 1974, the city was almost completely destroyed by Cyclone Tracy, Australia’s greatest natural disaster. It’s a tribute to those who stayed and to those who have come to live here after Tracy that the rebuilt city now thrives as an administrative and commercial center for northern Australia. Old Darwin has been replaced by something of an edifice complex—such buildings as Parliament House and the Supreme Court all seem very grand for such a small city, especially one that prides itself on its casual, outdoor-centric lifestyle. Today Darwin is the best place from which to explore Australia’s Top End, with its wonders of Kakadu and the Kimberley region.

The Kei islands are home to some of the most beautiful, pristine and untouched beaches in the world. They are the most accessible islands of southern Maluku and offer visitors a tranquil escape from the bustling nature of Darwin. Referred to as the hidden gems of Indonesia, Kei Islands are relatively unknown and therefore make for the perfect place to enjoy a day of swimming and snorkelling on an idyllic uninhabited picture postcard tropical island.

In 2008, the Kaimana Regency declared a 6000 square kilometer (over 2,300 square mile) Marine Protected Area around the waters of Triton Bay. Conservation International maintains an office in Kaimana and a field station out in Triton Bay where visiting scientists can do their work studying the staggering marine biodiversity of the reserve. It is truly second to none, and the area offers everything from the tiniest pygmy seahorses, to large and graceful whale sharks. Triton Bay is known for its beautiful soft coral gardens as well as nesting green turtles, and a population of coastal Bryde’s whales.

Pulau Koon is a secluded island sanctuary surrounded by some of the healthiest coral reefs in the region. Crystal-clear waters reveal a kaleidoscope of marine life, from colourful reef fish to larger pelagic species. With its untouched beaches and tranquil atmosphere, the island embodies a sense of pure remoteness, where nature remains largely undisturbed.

Fak Fak is a regional coastal town in West Papua that serves as an important gateway to the surrounding islands and coastal areas. Primarily a centre for local administration and trade, it offers insight into everyday life in Indonesia’s eastern provinces. As a stop along your immersive journey, Fak Fak provides a sense of regional context and continuity as you sail toward the remote natural highlights of Raja Ampat.

Misool is one of the crown jewels of Raja Ampat, renowned for its labyrinth of limestone karsts, hidden lagoons and dazzling turquoise waters. Beneath the surface lies one of the richest marine ecosystems on Earth, with pristine coral reefs teeming with life. Pulau Penamu is famed for its elevated viewpoints that reveal sweeping panoramas of Raja Ampat’s iconic karst seascape. From above, clusters of jungle-covered islets rise dramatically from luminous blue waters, creating one of the region’s most unforgettable vistas. The island’s rugged terrain and grand outlooks make it a highlight for appreciating the scale and beauty of this remote archipelago.

Wayag stands as the visual icon of Raja Ampat, where dramatic limestone formations scatter across crystal-clear waters in a breathtaking natural display. Its panoramic viewpoints offer sweeping vistas of verdant islets and winding lagoons, often regarded as among the most spectacular in Indonesia. The sense of scale and untouched beauty here defines the essence of the region.

Wofoh Island offers a serene and intimate setting within Raja Ampat, surrounded by shallow turquoise lagoons and vibrant coral reefs. Its calm, clear waters and quiet beaches create a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for experiencing the natural harmony of this remote island environment.
