Sea Cloud Spirit Review: Life Aboard a Luxury Tall Ship

26 February 2026

Sailing aboard a three-masted, fully rigged windjammer is an extraordinary way to cruise. In June 2024, I joined Sea Cloud Spirit in Edinburgh with my husband Derek for an eight-night sailing to Hamburg. Our journey took us from Leith to Aberdeen, across the North Sea to Stavanger in Norway, and onwards to the German island of Sylt before arriving in Hamburg.

Having travelled on many ocean and river ships, I was fascinated by the opportunity to experience a very different style of cruising – one that combines traditional sailing with modern comfort and intimate, small-ship luxury. In this first-hand Sea Cloud Spirit review, I share what life was really like on board and who I believe this distinctive ship will suit best.

First Impressions: A Warm Welcome at Sea

Embarkation set the tone for the entire voyage. The welcome felt warm and personal, and after a glass of champagne I was escorted to my junior suite, where champagne, fresh fruit and chocolate-covered strawberries were waiting for us.

Champagne, fresh fruit and chocolate-covered strawberries provided a warm welcome to Anita and Derek’s suite.

The suite felt more like an elegant boutique hotel room than a conventional cruise cabin. It was spacious, thoughtfully designed and finished with the dark wood, warm colours and nautical details found throughout the ship.

Dining on Sea Cloud Spirit: Elegant and Unhurried

Dining was another highlight of the voyage. Meals were unhurried and beautifully presented, with fresh ingredients and regional flavours reflecting the destinations along our route.

Dining Highlights

  • Breakfast (6:30am–11am): Extensive buffet with fresh fruit, pastries, cooked dishes and champagne
  • Lunch: Beautifully presented cuisine inspired by regional destinations
  • Dinner: Fine dining or relaxed open-air barbecue under the stars
  • Gala evenings: Two elegant formal nights
  • All-inclusive drinks: Excellent wines with meals and a fully inclusive bar

Service was warm and attentive without ever feeling intrusive, contributing to the relaxed atmosphere that defined the voyage.

Life Onboard: Relaxation, Wellness & Classic Sailing Charm

Sun Deck and Outdoor Spaces

The sun deck quickly became my favourite spot. Comfortable loungers, soft blankets, and endless sea views made it perfect for relaxing while watching the sails billow overhead.

The sun deck became one of Anita’s favourite places to relax and watch the sails overhead.

Library and Lounges

The forward-facing library offered a peaceful retreat with panoramic views. Evenings featured live music, deck parties, films, or relaxed conversation in the lounge.

Wellness and Fitness Facilities

  • Fully equipped gym
  • Spa with sauna, steam bath and relaxation room
  • Swim platform for sea dips (weather permitting)

Days on board unfolded at an unhurried pace, with plenty of space to relax and enjoy the scenery rather than moving between organised activities.

A True Sailing Experience, Rare in Modern Cruising

One of the most memorable moments was watching the crew set the sails entirely by hand, a spectacular sight rarely seen today. As the sails were raised at sunset, the ship moved silently across the water, creating a magical and almost nostalgic atmosphere.

Watching Sea Cloud Spirit’s sails being set by hand was one of the highlights of Anita’s voyage.

Sea Cloud Spirit also offers:

  • Captain’s open bridge policy
  • Bridge and engine room tours
  • Direct interaction with crew

Being able to watch the crew at work and speak with them about the ship created a much stronger connection with the sailing experience than I had encountered on a conventional cruise.

Sailing with a Reduced Reliance on Engine Power

Whenever conditions allow, Sea Cloud Spirit travels under sail, reducing its reliance on engine propulsion while creating a quieter and more atmospheric experience at sea. Although no cruise is without an environmental impact, harnessing wind power gives Sea Cloud Spirit a distinctive advantage over conventionally powered ships during suitable sailing conditions.

Things to Consider Before Booking Sea Cloud Spirit

Sea Cloud Spirit offers a very different experience from a conventional cruise ship. Entertainment is understated, onboard facilities are deliberately limited, and the pace is relaxed. There is no large theatre, casino or extensive choice of restaurants, while sailing conditions may influence the daily schedule. For travellers who value atmosphere, personal service and time spent at sea, these differences are part of the appeal – but those seeking constant entertainment or resort-style facilities may prefer a more traditional luxury cruise ship.

Who Is Sea Cloud Spirit Best For?

Sea Cloud Spirit is particularly well suited to travellers who:

  • Prefer intimate ships to large cruise resorts
  • Appreciate attentive service and understated luxury
  • Enjoy sea days and the experience of sailing itself
  • Value interesting ports over extensive onboard entertainment
  • Prefer a relaxed rather than activity-packed itinerary
  • Want a traditional sailing experience with modern comforts

It could also be an appealing choice for solo travellers, couples and experienced cruisers looking for something markedly different from a conventional luxury ship.
